SMA Formation House Kabwe, Zambia

Fr. Bernard Weiggers SMA formation house in Kabwe, Zambia was officially opened on 8th December 1995. The house was bought during the leadership of Fr. PJ Gomley, SMA and the house was opened in order to recruit only Zambians for SMA. From 1995 when the house was opened fifteen (15) Zambians have been ordained and are on mission in different countries, thanks to the sponsors.  Presently the house has eight students with two members of staff: Fr. Don Phiri, SMA and Fr. Michael O’Shea, SMA. Below is the community photo for the 2016 – 2017 academic year:

The students during the first year do what we call preparatory and those in second and third year do Philosophy at the Diocesan Major Seminary for two years. In total the students spend three years in this house. The following are the names of students:

The students who do philosophy cycle to go to the Diocesan Seminary which is about eight (8) Kilometres from the SMA Formation house. So they happily cover sixteen (16) Kilometres every day to and fro the seminary. Thanks to sponsors from Boston, USA that bought the four bicycles. We need six (6) more bicycles.  One bicycle costing 250 US Dollars. Below are the students with the four bicycles. The challenge is that they cycle on sandy road even during rainy season because the house has no bus for now and these bicycles.

We promote self-reliance in our students and thus we take up responsibility of re-painting our house. We also grow our own maize and vegetables.

We are never left out in making our bodies physically fit, and this is accomplished by having soccer, basketball and volleyball! we have sport twice a week and at some instances due to rain, we have indoor games. below is fr.pj, sma donating a soccer ball. students need a set of soccer jersey.

Apart from praying and working, we also have time to play! We annually go for picnic on one of the early days of November. We have interactions with each other and have fun together.

Since our founder had dedicated our society to Mary, we found it worthwhile that we also have a grotto in our compound. We now recite the holy rosary at this grotto:

We are very grateful to the kill Meyers family who generously funded the above grotto and we ask god to handsomely bless them. below are the kill Meyers:

We  are privileged each year to have the bishop of kabwe, rt.rev. bishop clement mulenga, sdb who gives seminar on African culture: this seminar is given to a joint class of both our students and the svd’s. below are the bishop, fr. don sma, fr. januz, svd, sr. matildah and the students.

May the Almighty bless all our sponsors. We will always remain grateful for their prayers and generosity.
